  • · Master context, applying both basics and dynamics thinking and skills as appropriate
  • · Be comfortable in ambiguity, productively inconsistent, intuitive and visionary.
  • · Develop the three traits of mastery: effectiveness, intelligence and responsibility.
  • · Face challenges of the future in a more flexible, creative and humane way.
  • · Learn from and model (but not imitate) great historical leaders who were masters of change.

CHANGE IS NORMAL

We seem to be functioning on the premise, “Change is abnormal”—you would think we had just happened into a pocket of turbulence and could hold our breath while we maneuvered out of it. We hear it in the office all the time: “If things weren’t so chaotic I could do my job.” And, in like manner, most managers use temporary fixes to get through the turbulence in hopes that “this is all going to settle down and get back to normal.” But, which is the normal year you want to get back to? In six thousand years, there has never been a moment when it could be said that the world “got back to normal.” Nor will it ever happen.

Dynamic times necessitate dynamic strategies, yet many people still cling to basic premises and static skill levels of the comfortable past while they are dragged forcibly into the volatile future. Common sense tells us we can’t handle rapid change in the same ways we handle the status quo. Yet many people still look for stable, orderly and predictable methods to cope with crises and unpredictable change. In today’s world, changes seem to be coming even faster and with greater challenges and complexity. But history provides a wealth of significant guides and clues to our situation. From the earliest human thought, people have recognized that change both destroys and creates great opportunities. These patterns repeat themselves over and over again—from the barbaric hordes of antiquity to the most recent corporate debacle.

In this book you will read about great leaders in every age—such as Winston Churchill, Elizabeth I, Alexander the Great, and Renaissance Italy’s Federigo da Montefeltro—who survived and even thrived, in turbulent times by grasping timeless principles and maintaining flexible visions of the future. Today’s leaders can look to these people as “who-to”s—who to learn from and think about—as models for how to think about and deal with change in a global context.

However, “No one can step in the same river twice,” wrote Heraclitis in 500 B.C., and no formula can anticipate the changes that will happen tomorrow. But we can still learn the characteristics that lead to abiding success from the great leaders of history. And, while the particulars of change may vary from decade to decade, the qualities of those who deal successfully with change have proven consistent throughout the ages.
